BREAKING: NASS Will Stand By You – Akpabio Tells Tinubu

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has pledged the unwavering support of the 10th National Assembly to President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing their commitment to helping the administration implement transformative policies for Nigeria’s development.

Speaking during a New Year homage to the President at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos on Wednesday, Akpabio, accompanied by other principal officers of the National Assembly and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, lauded Tinubu’s bold decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies, as crucial steps toward national prosperity.

Endorsing Reformative Policies

Akpabio described the subsidy removal and other economic reforms as necessary measures that should have been taken years ago. He acknowledged the hardships these policies impose on citizens but urged Nigerians to endure, likening the situation to the pains of childbirth that ultimately lead to joy.

“This journey of reforming Nigeria, in all aspects, you are not alone. The National Assembly is with you. We will stand by you to ensure that we do not repeat the same mistakes of the past,” Akpabio assured.

He further praised Tinubu’s recognition as Man of the Year 2024, stating it reflected his leadership in taking tough but necessary decisions to secure Nigeria’s future.

Sympathy for Recent Tragedies

The Senate President expressed condolences to the President over the loss of lives in stampedes during rice-sharing events in Ibadan, Okija, and Maitama. He described the incidents as unavoidable and offered prayers for the victims’ families.

“Please accept our sympathy for the souls of your citizens lost in 2024. May their souls rest in perfect peace,” Akpabio said, acknowledging the emotional toll these tragedies have had on the nation.

Support for Security and Investment

Akpabio commended the efforts of the military and security agencies in maintaining peace and security across Nigeria. He promised legislative support to ease their operations and enhance their effectiveness.

“Extend our congratulations to the men and women in uniform. The National Assembly will do everything possible to make their job easier,” he assured.

He also highlighted Tinubu’s strides in creating a business-friendly environment, particularly the ease of doing business and visa-on-arrival policies. According to Akpabio, these reforms have made Nigeria an attractive destination for foreign direct investment.

Confidence in Nigeria’s Future

Akpabio cited the quick subscription of a $2 billion Eurobond as evidence of global confidence in Nigeria under Tinubu’s leadership. He attributed this confidence to the democratic credentials of Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, all former senators with deep commitments to democratic principles.

“Democracy is all about change and bringing about freedom—freedom to do business and freedom to thrive,” Akpabio said.

A Collaborative Vision

The Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s dedication to supporting the Tinubu administration’s vision for a transformed Nigeria. He closed his remarks by wishing the President a prosperous New Year and expressing hope for the success of his reformative agenda.

“Happy New Year, Mr. President. May God be with all of us,” Akpabio concluded.
