Authority at the Kano State Government House has taken down several flags of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), a development that has fueled rumors that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may be on the verge of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Although no official confirmation has been made, but a visit to the Government House, the seat of power in Kano State, revealed a noticeable change in its political symbolism.
The NNPP flags, which previously flew side by side with the Nigerian national flag, were conspicuously missing from the premises on Monday evening.
Sources confided on this Newspaper that ‘Their removal is a confirmation of a possible shift in political alignment at the highest level of the state government.’
Checks revealed that only the Nigerian flag was visible at strategic points within the Government House complex located in Nassarawa GRA.
The sudden disappearance of any NNPP insignia, banners, or party colors marked a significant departure from what had been the norm since the party assumed control of the state administration in 2023.
Daily Independent observed that inside the corridors of power, the change was equally evident. Offices, halls, and public-facing areas that once bore the identity of the ruling party now appeared politically neutral, displaying no symbols beyond those of the Nigerian state.
Adding to the intrigue, supporters were seen around the Government House wearing red caps bearing the insignia associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The presence of these supporters has drawn mixed reactions from the public, while some view it as a routine political expression, others see it as a calculated signal meant to prepare the ground for a major announcement.
Despite the growing rumors, the Kano State Government has yet to issue an official statement explaining the removal of the NNPP flags.
The silence from both the governor’s office and party leadership has deepened public curiosity within and around the ancient city of Kano.
