BREAKING: Nigeria Requests Extradition from Finnish Govt

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has formally requested the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran agitator, from Finland.

This development was confirmed by General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, during an interview on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-In-Review program on December 31, 2024.

According to General Musa, all necessary legal and procedural documents have been submitted to Finnish authorities to facilitate the extradition process. The request is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to address Ekpa’s alleged role in inciting unrest, promoting terrorism, and supporting secessionist activities in the country.

Commenting on the matter, General Musa stated, “I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere. Legal action will be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested. The Federal Government has provided most of the required documentation to the Finnish Government, so I’m confident the right steps will be taken.”

Simon Ekpa was initially arrested in November 2024 by Finnish authorities alongside four others on suspicion of terror-related offenses, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. Following his arrest, the Lahti District Court in Finland ordered his detention, citing evidence of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent in Nigeria.

The pro-Biafran leader is accused of using social media platforms to propagate separatist ideologies and incite violence in southeastern Nigeria. His activities have been a source of growing concern for Nigerian authorities, who view his campaigns as a significant threat to national security and unity.

The extradition request signals Nigeria’s determination to hold Ekpa accountable for his alleged actions and curb the rising tide of separatist sentiments in the country. It also highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with international partners in addressing cross-border terrorism and cyber-based incitement.

Observers note that Finland’s response to Nigeria’s request could set an important precedent for international cooperation in addressing global terrorism and online radicalization. The outcome of this case is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in its southeastern region.
