BREAKING: Nigerians in US to protest at White House

In condemnation of the State of Emergency declared in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalyi Fubara, his deputy and other elected officials of the state by the president, some Nigerians in diaspora have vowed to protest on the streets of the United States of America.

These Nigerians under the umbrella of the Democratic Movement (DM) said it members and leaders would be staging a walk at the White House to register their grievance on the proclamation made by President Bola Tinubu and its ratification by the National Assembly.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 3, the president of the group, Cosmos Achief called on the president to reinstate Governor Fubara and his deputy and restore all the lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

According to Achief, the DM through its protest aims to draw global attention to a “direct assault on democracy and the will of the people of River State and Nigeria at large.

He also said that protest is expected to draw the attention of Nigerians in the diaspora, civil rights activists, and supporters of democracy who share concerns about governance in Nigeria.

He said, “We cannot sit back while an elected governor is removed, an entire legislature is suspended, and an unelected administrator is imposed. These are dangerous precedents that threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

“The world needs to see what is happening in Rivers State. A democratically elected government has been suspended under the guise of emergency rule. We are urging President Donald Trump to engage with Nigerian authorities and call for the immediate restoration of constitutional order,” Achief said.

He also warned that the president should be aware that his actions and decision in Rivers state could lead to grave diplomatic consequences that would portray Nigeria as a nation heading towards dictatorship.
