BREAKING: Nigerians Seek Alternative For Protein As Prices Of Cow Hits N1.7 Million

Nigerians have started seeking alternatives to beef following the recent high cost of cows across markets in the country.

While some citizens said they have now resorted to fishes like dried panla, others said they do not even bother about meat or it’s like in their foods.

Mrs Deborah Anike, told Politics Nigeria that with the way things have been going from bad to worse in the country, she only concentrates on feeding her family well and seek for other sources of protein for her children.

According to Anike, rather than buy beef for her cooking, she now resorts to foods like Okpa, Beans and other legume for protein.

“Meat is so expensive, these days I can’t even afford to buy meat anymore and my children still need protein. So I rather cook more of bean, Okpa and other protein-rich foods for them.

“I also used panla fish because even eggs and other fishes are so expensive too,” Anike said.

Recently, the Lagos State Butchers Association stated that the number of cows slaughtered in the state dropped from 5,000 to 3,000 per day.

Bamidele Kazeem, the association’s patron said the economic challenges faced by citizens and terrorists attacks are the root cause of the decline in the number of animals slaughtered daily.

“This reduction is due to numerous factors, including economic challenges, terror-related activities, and environmental concerns.

“Previously, we could purchase a cow for between N400,000 and N500,000, depending on the breed, size, and location, but we now pay between N1.6 million and N1.7 million for a cow,” Kazeem said.
