Breaking: Nigeria’s Political Defections Continue Unstopped

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Abubakar Abdullahi, has said it would be impossible to stop Nigerian politicians from defecting from one party to another.

Abdullahi said many things cause a politician to leave his or her party for another party.

Naija News reports that the former National Secretary of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), now a bloc in the APC, stated that selfish interests also drive politicians into defection.

Speaking with New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, the APC chieftain, however, decried the lack of philosophy among current politicians in the country.

“You see in Nigerian politics, defections cannot be avoided. There are certain issues that force people to defect.

“Majority of the present crops of the elected officials and political appointees are not well-bred politicians. They are just opportunists.

“Once they got elected or appointed, they indulge in all sorts of unruly behaviours which lead them to commit a lot of atrocities,” he said.

The defunct ANPP’s Secretary added that some politicians defect to run away from being probed for their corruption cases.

“Most of them will be running helter-skelter, looking for where to hide,” he stated.

He disagreed that Nigeria may slide into a one-party state. According to him, those defecting to the ruling party would betray those who believe in them.

“Because at the end the day, the defectors will definitely betray those who believe in them,” he argued.

He, however, called for attitudinal change among politicians.
