BREAKING: NNPC Responds to Obasanjo, Highlights Corporation’s Transformation into Global Energy Leader

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent comments regarding the state of Nigeria’s energy sector, offering a respectful acknowledgment of his contributions and a detailed account of the strides made by the NNPC.

In a statement released on Thursday, the spokesman Femi Soneye, while emphasising the NNPC’s deep respect for Obasanjo’s legacy, provided a comprehensive overview of the remarkable transformation of the corporation under its new model, NNPC Limited.

“We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a respected statesman who has made significant contributions to the growth and progress of Nigeria. His dedication to national development and his right to speak on matters of national importance are both deeply respected.

“Today, NNPC has evolved into NNPC Limited, a private entity that has transitioned from being a loss-making organization to becoming a profit-oriented global energy leader,” Soneye noted.

Since its reorganisation, NNPC Limited has not only focused on oil and gas but has expanded its scope to become an integrated energy company. In line with global energy trends, the company is now prioritising sustainable energy solutions to address Nigeria’s growing demands.

One of the key highlights of NNPC Limited’s achievements, according to the Soneye, is the complete rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PhRC) and the Warri Refinery.

“This is not the typical Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) of the past but a comprehensive overhaul designed to meet world-class standards,” Soneye explained, adding that similar efforts are underway at the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries.

Soneye credited the ongoing progress to the visionary leadership of the NNPC Limited board, led by Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Mele Kyari, and the transformative policies introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. These collective efforts, Soneye suggested, are steering NNPC Limited toward an ambitious goal of redefining energy security for Nigeria while also positioning the company as a leading player in the global energy market.

In a gesture of respect and goodwill, the NNPC invited former President Obasanjo to join in the company’s transformation.

“We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to join us in this historic journey. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance, which will always be welcomed and cherished,” Soneye stated.

The NNPC further extended an invitation for Obasanjo to tour the newly rehabilitated refineries to witness firsthand the progress made under NNPC Limited’s leadership.

“We remain grateful for his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development and are committed to building a brighter, more prosperous future for our nation,” Soneye concluded.
