The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that fasting may continue on Sunday as the new moon has not been sighted in Nigeria.

The development means Ramadan is not yet officially over in the country.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede on Saturday.

He urged Muslims to look for the Shawwal crescent on the 29th of Ramadan.

“If Muslims sight the crescent in accordance with the moon sighting and verification standards, then His Eminence would declare Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the 1st of Shawwal and the day of Idul Fitr,” the statement said.

This comes after Saudi Arabia reported seeing the crescent moon on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia uses more than 10 astronomical observatories to track the lunar calendar, helping determine key Islamic dates, including the start and end of Ramadan and Eid.

Ramadan is a sacred month in Islam, observed through fasting, prayer, charity, and good deeds. It is one of the five pillars of Islam.
