The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has faulted the formation of a new group known as the Christian Elders of the North (CEN), saying the group has been set up to undermine the leadership of CAN in the north.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Secretary of Northern CAN, Elder Sunday Oibe, faulted the formation of the new group, saying that the action of the founders of the group was unlawful and mischievous.
“Our attention has been drown to a newly-formed group called the Christians Elders of the North, which unfortunately seemed to have been set up to undermine the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja,” the statement reads in part.
“While the Northern CAN respect everyone’s right to freedom of association and the formation of groups, it strongly opposes any organization created with the intent of destabilizing or undermining others.
“We find it deeply troubling that one group would attempt to conduct elections for another, such actions were not only improper but unlawful.
“Anybody parading himself as the elected Chairman of Northern CAN is an impostor and a desperado.”
The statement further called on members of the public to disregard the purported election of leadership for Northern CAN as carried out by the Christians Elders of the North, emphasizing that their action was calculated to ridicule the Christian body for selfish interest.
