The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) of Ekiti state has called for the immediate release of one of its members, Yemi Agbeleoba, General Manager of Our People’s FM, who was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Agbeleoba was picked up from his home in the early hours of Wednesday over his alleged involvement in the ongoing sexual harassment scandal involving the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina.
Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, described the arrest as harassment and victimization of the press. He warned that if Agbeleoba was not released within 24 hours, journalists in the state would boycott all FUOYE-related activities.
Babatuyi revealed that Agbeleoba was targeted because he was suspected to be one of the vocal voices on a WhatsApp group discussing the allegations against the FUOYE Vice Chancellor.
“We call on DSS and FUOYE management to release Agbeleoba immediately. Hiding under cyberbullying claims to silence people will not be accepted,” Babatuyi stated.
The union urged security agencies to avoid being used to cover up the sexual harassment allegations and insisted on press freedom and fair investigation into the matter.
