A former Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, Okoi Obono-Obla, has declared his intention to contest for the position of National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the party’s National Convention scheduled for March 2026.
Naija News reports that Obono-Obla made this known while speaking with journalists in Calabar, Cross River State.
The former presidential aide said his experience in law, governance and anti-corruption positioned him as the right candidate for the role.
“I am not just a candidate, but a custodian of integrity, experience, and vision,” he said.
Obono-Obla noted that his 35 years of legal practice across Nigeria’s judicial system would help ensure that the party’s operations remain within the framework of the law.
According to him, his legal background would also help the party avoid avoidable crises and litigation.
The APC chieftain recalled that he had served as a Special Assistant to the President and to the Attorney General of the Federation, roles he said exposed him to the delicate balance between politics and policy.
He also highlighted his role as Acting Secretary of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, where he contributed to strengthening justice delivery in the country.
Obono-Obla said his experience as an anti-corruption advocate would enable him to promote transparency and accountability within the party.
He further stated that his experience as a writer, author and commentator on national and international issues would help him effectively articulate the party’s vision.
According to him, the skills he has acquired over the years would enable him to communicate the party’s programmes clearly to members and the public.
Obono-Obla, who is also a traditional ruler, said his role in the traditional institution gives him grassroots legitimacy and a deeper understanding of community dynamics.
“I understand the pulse of our communities, the importance of inclusivity, and the need to bridge modern governance with traditional institutions,” he said.

The former panel chairman also recalled his role in the formation of the APC in 2013.
He said he served as Secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change Merger Committee and Co-Secretary of the Joint Inter-Party Merger Committee that negotiated the creation of the ruling party.
