Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an urgent investigation into the case of one Segun Olowookere who was sentenced to death for stealing chickens.
Governor Adeleke gave the order in a statement issued by his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, on Tuesday.
The governor directed the state Chief Justice to include the man on the list of those eligible for pardon before the end of the year.
The order comes after a mercy plea to the governor on behalf of Segun Olowookere by the World Peace Center.
The center’s Executive Director, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, said that Olowookere was sentenced to death 10 years ago when he was 17 years old.
Omotoyosi said, “Segun’s sentence stemmed from an incident involving the alleged theft of chickens and eggs from a farm in Oyan, Osun State over a decade ago.”
She said the death sentence imposed on him was harsh considering the crime committed and his young age, which is why they urged the government to intervene in the matter, investigate the evidence found in the case and ensure that justice is served to him.
