The Federal Government said it has discovered over 6,000 Niger Republic nationals with registered National Identity Numbers (NIN).
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said the foreigners were discovered following a clean up which was ordered by Presidemt Bola Tinubu.
The directive by the president was given to an inter-ministerial committee.
The committee was saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a comprehensive data for the National Social Register for the Federal Government’s social investment programmes.
Sources within the presidency confirmed that the minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has affirmed that the NINs have been withdrawn from the foreigners.
He made the disclosure while briefing the Federal Executive Council at their weekly meeting.
The source said, “It was the Minister of Interior that gave that briefing because, you know, NIMC is under him.
“The interior minister said NIMC is tidying up the database because they found over 6,000 people from Niger Republic who obtained NIN. But they have been wiped from the database,” the source added.
Also, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs is said to need the cleaned-up data for its social register.
Other ministries too, like Education need the data for student loans, and planning among others, the source added.
