The Oyo State Government has dismissed reports claiming that the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away.
On Monday night, some media outlets speculated that the revered monarch had died at the age of 89. However, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, refuted the claims in an interview with Punch Online, stating that the Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty.
“Yes. Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty. I spoke with one of his sons, Prince Olaseke Owolabi Olakulehin, who represented the family at the coronation committee,” he confirmed.
Similarly, the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Gbenga Ayoade, debunked the rumours, insisting that the monarch was doing well and had just finished eating amala before the news spread.
“By the time I left the palace around 8 pm, everything was fine. There was no crisis. When I contacted the palace later, they confirmed that Baba is hale and healthy,” Ayoade said.
He also dismissed reports that the Olubadan had been flown out of Ibadan for medical attention, emphasizing that the monarch remains in the city and is in good health.
Oba Olakulehin, who received his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024, will celebrate his 90th birthday on July 5, 2025.
