BREAKING: Party Suspends Senator for Associating With Opposition Leaders

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, the lawmaker representing Kano South Senatorial District.

He was suspended alongside three prominent party members: Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.

Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, the party chairman in the state, announced this during a press briefing in Kano on Monday.

He stated that the suspensions were due to alleged anti-party activities.

This decision comes just 24 hours after the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, hinted at a potential mass defection of senior members from the NNPP to the APC.

According to Dungurawa, the affected members, who were elected to the National Assembly under the NNPP platform, have recently engaged in actions that undermine the party’s principles and objectives.

He condemned them for failing to uphold party loyalty, despite having been granted complementary tickets during the elections.

A key incident leading to the suspension was the wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter, which coincided with the commissioning of projects at his university in Sumaila.

Sumaila invited notable APC members, including Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Ganduje, along with other opposition figures.

Dungurawa expressed surprise that the events were predominantly attended by individuals who had previously opposed Kawu, while NNPP members were conspicuously absent.

To address this situation, the party has established a committee to investigate the matter and seek a resolution.

Despite the suspension, Dungurawa emphasised that the NNPP remains receptive to reconciliation.

He stated that if the suspended members acknowledge their actions and request forgiveness, the party may consider reinstating them.
