The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday said it had launched a manhunt for the accomplices of the suspended Olorile of Orile-Ifo, Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who is facing trial for assaulting a 73-year-old chief, Areola Abraham.
The police also disclosed that Ogunjobi was arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in the Ifo area of the state on three counts bordering on conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.
He said, “The Kabiyesi Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who assaulted one elderly man in a viral video, in Ifo Ogun State, has been charged to court today February 4, 2025, on three counts of conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
“He was granted bail while the case was adjourned to 06/03/2025.”
The FPRO vowed that justice would be served on the matter.
“The police will continue to uphold the rule of law and the core values of the noble profession,” Adejobi said.
Giving an update on the incident on Tuesday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omoloa Odutola, disclosed that a manhunt had begun for Ogunjobi’s accomplices.
She said, “Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi was arraigned before Ifo Magistrate Court on three counts of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to breach the peace.
“The case has been adjourned to March 6, 2025. Olukosi and others at large will be arrested.”
PUNCH Metro reports that Ogunjobi sparked outrage after a viral video surfaced showing him verbally and physically assaulting Arinola.
In the two-minute clip, Arinola was seen kneeling on the road while a man, said to be Ogunjobi, cursed him and his family while accusing him of conspiracy.
The monarch, reportedly a retired police officer, also boasted of his influence over law enforcement agencies and threatened to jail the chief.
At one point, a man accompanying the traditional ruler slapped Arinola and ordered him to prostrate before the monarch.
Following a barrage of condemnation from Nigerians, the Ogun State Government on Monday placed the monarch on a six-month suspension for his uncivil conduct not befitting an Oba.
The decision, according to a statement from the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Communication and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, was reached after Oba Ogunjobi and his victim were invited by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, for interrogation.
