BREAKING: Police arrest man for alleged homicide during wedding fighting in Niger

A festive wedding in Kumbashi District, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, turned deadly on January 18, 2025, when a violent clash erupted between two rival villages, Yabawa and Ungwar Sarkin-Daji, resulting in the tragic death of 30-year-old Iliyasu Aminu.

The dispute, which escalated during the wedding ceremony, led to a fatal machete attack that left the victim with a severe head injury. The police have since arrested one Jamilu Saidu, a resident of Kumbashi, in connection with the murder.

In a statement issued by the Niger State Police Command, spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that the police operatives from Bangi Division acted swiftly following the altercation.

“On January 18, 2025, at about 8 p.m., police operatives arrested Jamilu Saidu, a resident of Kumbashi District, Mariga LGA, for the culpable homicide of Iliyasu Aminu, who was from the same area,” Abiodun said.

The altercation, according to the police, was triggered by long-standing tensions between the two villages, which erupted violently during the wedding event. In the heat of the clash, Saidu allegedly struck Aminu on the head with a machete, causing fatal injuries.

“The suspect has confessed to the crime,” Abiodun added, noting that Saidu was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further investigation and prosecution.

The tragic incident has further shaken the community of Kumbashi District, as the violence unfolded in the midst of what was supposed to be a joyous celebration.

Police sources confirmed that Saidu is among several suspects recently apprehended for various offenses across Niger State, indicating a rise in criminal activities within the region.

The police have vowed to continue their efforts in addressing such crimes and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
