BREAKING: Police restore security details for Speaker Mojisola Meranda

The Lagos State Police Command has reinstated the security details of Hon. Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja.

Earlier, Vanguard had reported that security escorts attached to the Speaker’s office and residence were withdrawn on Thursday morning. However, Jimoh clarified that the withdrawal was part of an ongoing audit of police personnel and firearms.

“Periodic audits of police personnel attached to eminent personalities and groups is a statutory procedure laid down by the police,” Jimoh stated.

He explained that the exercise was aimed at ensuring accountability of officers, proper use of firearms, and verification of duty posts. He also noted that some personnel were found to be on unauthorized assignments and would be redeployed to official police stations and commands to strengthen security across Lagos.

Jimoh highlighted the need for efficient deployment of police officers, given Lagos State’s population of over 20 million and a police force of fewer than 18,000 officers. He added that the Special Protection Units Department at the Force Headquarters had been assigned to oversee security arrangements for individuals requiring police protection.

“Some approvals for police personnel attached to certain individuals in Lagos State cannot be traced or verified. However, those affected can apply to the Inspector-General of Police for approval, which will be urgently reviewed on merit,” he stated.

Jimoh emphasized that the audit is not limited to Lagos State but is being conducted across all police commands in the country.
