The Commissioner of Police for the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Mr. Godwin Omodeinde, has called on students in Ogun State to avoid engaging in cybercrime activities.
This appeal was made during a dialogue with leaders from key student bodies in Ogun State, including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), Association of Southern Nigerian Students (ASONIS), and the Student Union Government of Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade (GAPOSA).
The dialogue followed the arrest of 14 individuals, aged between 18 and 28, at Saapade, Ogun State, on January 15. The suspects, believed to be members of an internet fraud syndicate operating within Lagos and Ogun States, included eight students from Gateway Polytechnic and four National Youth Service Corps members, among others.
Omodeinde emphasised the detrimental impact of internet fraud on Nigeria’s image and the country’s efforts to exit the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. He outlined the negative consequences of this status, including reduced foreign investment, increased transaction costs, and loss of correspondent banking relationships.
The CP called for strong cooperation between student unions and the Nigeria Police to ensure that wrongdoers are brought to justice. He urged the union leaders not to shield criminal members but to assist law enforcement in maintaining integrity within the student community.
