The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to step down from office or risk being impeached.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday morning, Okocha criticised the governor’s invitation to the 27 lawmakers for a meeting, dismissing it as a deceptive move.
Naija News reports that the governor’s invitation came after a prolonged standoff with 27 lawmakers loyal to his former political ally, Nyesom Wike.
It was also sent following the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued to him to present the 2025 budget.
Additionally, the House had earlier demanded the dismissal of commissioners and board members who were not screened by the Assembly.
The legislators also summoned the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for questioning.
A letter dated March 9 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, was addressed to Speaker Mathew Amaewhule.
It stated that Fubara had acknowledged the Supreme Court’s judgment and was prepared to engage with lawmakers.
The meeting’s agenda included discussions on legislative accommodation, payment of outstanding allowances, the budget presentation, and other crucial issues.
However, despite hopes that the Supreme Court ruling would settle the lingering political crisis in the state, the situation has instead escalated, with both factions interpreting the judgment in their favour.
Describing the situation, Okocha accused Fubara of undermining President Bola Tinubu and disregarding the rule of law.
“The invitation to the lawmakers is a Greek Gift. The Supreme Court Judgement is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the governor now is for him to resign or be impeached,” he stated.
