BREAKING: Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara Sends Commissioner Nominee List to Assembly

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has reportedly submitted a list of commissioner nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly for screening and approval, as part of fresh moves to stabilise governance in the state.

A source close to the governor disclosed to Business Day that the list was forwarded to the House on Friday, days after Fubara dissolved the State Executive Council and relieved all Special Advisers of their duties.

The development is widely seen as part of the recent truce brokered by President Bola Tinubu between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

According to the source, the list was submitted to the Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, whose leadership was recognised by the Supreme Court following the political crisis that rocked the state.

The lawmakers are expected to commence the screening and confirmation process in the coming days.

The source added that, in the spirit of reconciliation, some nominees may come from the political camp of Wike.

Before the dissolution of the cabinet, Fubara had been working with only eight commissioners following the protracted political standoff with the Assembly.

There are also indications that the governor may appoint a new Chief of Staff as part of the broader reconciliation efforts initiated by President Tinubu.

As part of the peace process, Fubara is also expected to commission the newly constructed House of Assembly Complex to enable lawmakers relocate from their temporary quarters.

According to the source, “The governor has already sent the names of commissioner-nominees to the House of Assembly. It is now for the Speaker to invite them for screening. In the spirit of reconciliation, some names may come from the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Commissioners who performed well may also be reappointed.

“The house complex undertaken by the governor will be commissioned soon, and lawmakers will move from their temporary quarters to the new facility”.

The commissioning of the complex is viewed as a symbolic and practical step toward consolidating the truce between the governor and the Amaewhule-led Assembly.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no formal acknowledgement of the submission of the nominee list by either the Rivers State House of Assembly or the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.

However, the list is expected to be made public once the Assembly begins the screening process. See more
