Several officials of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) have resigned from their positions, citing persistent issues within the commission and the recent Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the local government elections held on 5th October 2024.
The Supreme Court had ruled that the elections were not conducted in accordance with electoral guidelines.
In response, the RSIEC announced a new local government election scheduled for 9th August 2025.
The chairman of the commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), made this announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. His statement came after Governor Siminalayi Fubara issued a directive for the commission to begin preparations for fresh elections.
Governor Fubara continues to engage in a political battle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, over the control of political structures in the state.
Meanwhile, the RSIEC is currently under investigation by the Rivers State House of Assembly regarding its management of the October 2024 election.
