Valentine Ozigbo, a governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is contesting the outcome of the APC Anambra governorship primaries, which declared Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu as the party’s flagbearer.
Ozigbo described the process as “totally unfair” and alleged external interference, notably by Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
In an interview with ARISE News on Tuesday, Ozigbo claimed irregularities marred the delegate congress, including the sudden appearance of unauthorised delegates.
“I like to insist that things are done properly wherever I find myself,” he said. “That’s why I was dismayed by what happened during the APC delegate congress in Anambra State. Suddenly, we saw a list of delegates who weren’t even members of the party. On the morning of the congress, a new list appeared from nowhere. At some point, they abandoned every list altogether.”
Ozigbo further alleged that Governor Soludo exerted undue influence over the process.
“Soludo is scared of having me on the ballot. It’s not the first time I’m making this allegation. Nicholas Ukachukwu became a willing tool. He’s just comfortable playing along, but over time, the truth will come out.”
He accused Soludo of orchestrating a political maneuver to keep him off the ballot, asserting that his candidacy poses a significant threat to Soludo’s chances of re-election.
“Anambra people know what happened. If I’m on the APC ticket, Soludo is gone. That’s why they’re doing everything possible to stop me. They’ll gang up, but they’ll lose. By God’s grace, I’ll prove my case in court. Governor Soludo knows he won’t stand a chance if I’m the APC candidate.”
Backing his claims with public sentiment, Ozigbo cited a social media poll as anecdotal evidence of his popularity.
“It wasn’t a scientific poll, but it reflected the public mood. I had over 90% support, while Soludo had less than 10%. We’ve conducted more credible polls too. This isn’t about rhetoric; it’s about facts.”
Regarding his legal challenge, Ozigbo stated, “My case in court is simple: Nicholas was not even qualified to contest the primary in the first place. I will prove that. And yes, I maintain that Soludo played a role in what happened in APC. I say that authoritatively.”
Ozigbo also defended his decision to leave the Labour Party for the APC, asserting his belief in the party’s ability to unseat APGA, which has governed Anambra since 2006.
“I have no regrets leaving the Labour Party. In the APC, I believe my value will be better appreciated. The impact I’ll make here will be more significant.”
