BREAKING: South Africa Beats Nigeria To Pick Hosting Rights For WASM Congress

North-West University in Cape Town, South Africa, has been chosen to host the fifth edition of the World Association for Sports Management (WASM) congress.

The announcement was made at the organisation’s annual general meeting held at Qatar University’s Doha campus. The South African school’s bid beat out three others, including Australia’s, which came in third, and Nigeria’s, which was ranked second.

The decision was greeted with enthusiasm by the African Sports Management Association (ASMA), whose President, Professor Oluwaseun Omotayo, led a delegation to the meeting. Although Nigeria did not win the hosting rights, Omotayo said he was pleased with the outcome.

“The joy for me as ASMA President is that Africa triumphed,” he said. “The Congress coming to Africa shall expectedly deepen professionalism in sports management practice on the continent.”

The new President of WASM is Professor Ruth Crabtree of the United Kingdom. The congress is expected to attract attendees from around the world and will provide a platform for discussion of topics including sports marketing, athlete development, and organisational management.
