BREAKING: Stampede in Church, Many Alms Seekers Killed

In a heartbreaking incident in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), several alms seekers lost their lives during a stampede that unfolded on Saturday morning at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama. The church was hosting an event aimed at distributing rice and other vital palliatives to those in need.

Witnesses at the scene reported a significant presence of security personnel, underscoring the gravity of the situation. It was well-known that the church had dedicated itself to giving back to the community annually, yet this year’s event turned into a tragedy.

The victims were predominantly women and children, highlighting the vulnerability of those seeking assistance. The FCT Police Command confirmed that, tragically, ten individuals perished in the chaos, including four children, while eight more suffered various injuries.

In a statement released by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, it was reported that the stampede occurred around 6:30 am, resulting in this catastrophic loss of life. Among the injured, four have been treated and discharged, while the others continue to receive medical attention.

To prevent such tragedies in the future, the FCT Police Command has mandated that all organisations, religious bodies, and groups planning public events or charitable activities must notify the police in advance. This crucial step is intended to enable the deployment of adequate security measures, ensuring public safety and averting further disasters.

Organisers who fail to comply with this directive may be held liable for any incidents or loss of life arising from negligence.

The FCT Police Command remains dedicated to protecting lives and property within the territory. The public is urged to cooperate with the police by following these guidelines and promptly reporting emergencies via the FCT Control Room at 0803 200 3913 or 0806 032 1234.

This devastating event comes just days after a similar tragedy claimed the lives of approximately 40 children at a funfair in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
