The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, announced on the Sunday Politics programme of Channels Television that the Federal Government plans to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and turn it into a revenue-generating agency.
She explained that the government is working on transforming the NYSC scheme itself to reflect the present realities of the nation. The minister also pointed out that resources are dwindling, and oil revenues are not as they used to be. Therefore, the government is looking for innovative ways to ensure that corps members’ welfare is well-taken care of.
Regarding the remuneration of corps members, the minister stated that they are working on holistic funding of the NYSC scheme. The reforms aim to prepare corps members for the job market, to be decently and gainfully employed or to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship, and perfect matching into primary assignment and all the support they need in that career path.
She also revealed that corps members would no longer be posted to states considered unsafe due to worsening security conditions in the country.
