BREAKING: The Fourth Mainland Bridge In Lagos Is Set To Become The Second Longest Bridge In Africa

The Fourth Mainland Bridge in Lagos, Nigeria, is slated to become the continent’s second-longest bridge upon its completion in 2027. Spanning nearly 24 miles and estimated to cost £2.3 billion, the bridge will feature eight lanes and three toll booths.

Designed to alleviate congestion on the Third Mainland Bridge, which was constructed in 1990, the Fourth Mainland Bridge will be a significant addition to Lagos’ infrastructure. The project is spearheaded by the CCECC-CRCCIG consortium, led by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

Each carriageway of the bridge will consist of four lanes, facilitating smoother traffic flow from Lagos Island across the Lagos Lagoon to Ikorodu. Despite initial plans to commence construction in 2019, various delays have postponed the project’s start date.

Upon construction, it is anticipated that approximately 800 homes will be affected by demolition, a reduction from the original estimate of 4,000 homes proposed by the Nigerian government. The bridge will be aligned with eight existing roads, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Igbogbo-Lagos road, to enhance connectivity within the region.
