Thousands of people rallied in support of Niger’s new military leaders in the capital, Niamey, on Sunday as West African heads of state met to discuss a response to a coup in a key ally of the global fight against jihadists in the region.
Supporters marched on the embassy of France — whose continued influence in its ex-colonies in Africa has become an increasing source of tension in recent years — as the Economic Community of West African States met for an emergency meeting in neighboring Nigeria.
The junta warned the bloc not to intervene militarily to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
