For the second time in three days, heavily armed thugs attempted to disrupt the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which is sitting at the High Court Complex, Sapele Road, Benin.
The disruption attempt on Friday followed a similar incident on Wednesday.
The thugs reportedly tried to force their way into the venue where the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member tribunal was sitting but were swiftly repelled by security operatives stationed at the court.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, continued their case against the outcome of the September 21, 2024, Edo governorship election.
Naija News understands tha the PDP is contesting the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress as the winner, alleging widespread irregularities during the poll.
The petitioners, represented by their lead counsel, Adetunji Oyeyipo, SAN, tendered over 1,000 Certified True Copies of documents and forms to substantiate their claims that they scored the highest number of valid votes in the election.
However, counsels for the Independent National Electoral Commission, Governor Okpebholo, and the APC, including Kanu Agabi, SAN, Onyeachi Ikpeazu, SAN, and D.C. Denwigwe, SAN (holding the brief of Emmanuel Ukala, SAN), raised objections to the admissibility of the documents.
They informed the tribunal that they would provide detailed reasons for their objections at the final address stage of the proceedings.
The tribunal adjourned proceedings to Saturday, and the petitioners are expected to tender more documents in support of their case.
