President Bola Tinubu has signed into law two bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Announcing the development on Thursday, Tinubu emphasized that these specialized institutions would address critical educational needs while fostering research, innovation, and economic growth in Nigeria.
“These institutions will serve as training grounds for developing agriculture, science, and technology professionals, enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy,” the President said in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
The establishment of these universities adds to the country’s growing list of federal higher institutions. According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria currently has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities.
In addition to the Osun and Ekiti institutions, President Tinubu recently approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town, Tai, Rivers State, on February 3, 2025.
The President has also sanctioned the takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, converting it into a federal institution to expand access to quality education in the region.
The move aligns with the administration’s broader vision of strengthening Nigeria’s educational system and producing skilled professionals to drive national development.
