President Bola Tinubu has called off all official engagements in Lagos today, including his planned attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta.
This is reaction to the stampedes in Abuja and Okija, Anambra which claimed at least 27 persons with others injured.
Tinubu was set to watch the regatta from his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi, with dignitaries already in attendance.
However, upon receiving updates about the tragedies, the President decided to cancel his appearance.
In his remarks, President Tinubu expressed sorrow over the loss of life, urging the police to act swiftly to prevent such tragedies in the future.
He also pointed out the similarities between the stampedes and an earlier incident in Ibadan, emphasizing the need for better crowd management during public events.
The President prayed for the souls of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He further stated that these events could be prevented if safety protocols are followed.
While mourning with the victims’ families, Tinubu also wished the Lagos Boat Regatta organizers a smooth and successful celebration.
