Mrs. Ijeoma Ugwenebo yesterday emerged as the pioneer chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Kubwa District Society, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The institute is one of the renowned professional accountancy bodies in Nigeria, globally recognised for its sterling standards and excellence.

Speaking at the event, ICAN President, Chief Davidson C.S. Alaribe, FCA, said: “I want to congratulate you all on this historic appointment as the pioneer chairman of ICAN Kubwa District Society and on the inauguration of your executive members.”

Alaribe praised Ugwenebo’s impressive track record, stating that her leadership vision, courage, and commitment to excellence were commendable.

“Your passion for the growth of this Institute is truly remarkable. May God Almighty guide and direct you,” he added.

At the inauguration and investiture of the pioneer chairman and executive members in Abuja, Alaribe reiterated the history of the Institute: “We all know that ICAN was established on September 1, 1965. By September 1 this year, ICAN will be 60 years old, and we are already planning for that celebration.

“When the Institute was founded, we had only 250 members. Four years after, that number rose to 66,000. Today, we have 67,800 members.”

He addressed the issue of perceived low membership, saying: “Some people still think the number is not enough, but becoming an ICAN member requires dedication. You can’t just wake up and declare yourself a member. You must earn it.”

He emphasized inclusivity and growth saying we are working to make Abuja a solid city for ICAN. As I always say, there should be no competition but cooperation and partnership. I am confident that with the new pioneer chairman and her executive, we will achieve this transformation.”

Using an analogy, he added: “No matter how beautiful a child is, if the mother doesn’t take her to the village square or the market, no one will see her or recommend her to a suitor. Exposure is necessary.”

In her acceptance speech, Pioneer Chairman Mrs. Ugwenebo outlined collaborative plans for training and career development programs aimed at strengthening the ICAN Kubwa District Society and expanding its membership.

“I want to reassure our members that the Kubwa District will experience greater visibility from ICAN. We are committed to building friendship, unity, and achieving greatness within the district,” she said.

She stressed the importance of a professional and inclusive culture:

“We want a district where there is love, unity, and kindness not division. Though we may disagree at times, we will always find a way to agree as professionals and intellectuals.”

Mrs. Ugwenebo emphasized the value of the network: “We aim to make our meetings a platform for sharing love, knowledge, and professional networking. Those currently unemployed will find opportunities. Those not yet in professional practice will be encouraged to get involved.”

“We are determined to nurture this newly established district to stand strong and tall among other districts in Nigeria. We have assembled an excellent team of chartered accountants from all walks of life, both in the public and private sectors.”
