BREAKING: Violence Looms, Police Urge Osun Government to Suspend Council Poll

The Nigeria Police Force has urged the Osun State Government to halt the upcoming Local Government elections.

They cite credible intelligence suggesting a significant risk of violence and serious security threats if the elections proceed.

This advice was outlined in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday, February 21.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force has received credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and substantial security threats should the planned Local Government elections take place in Osun State. Reports from joint intelligence operations reveal that various groups, including political factions and other interested parties, are mobilising to provoke unrest, disrupt public order, and undermine democratic processes.

“Given this imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the elections immediately in the interest of public safety and national stability.

“The Force has evaluated the current security situation and determined that conducting the elections under these volatile conditions could lead to widespread unrest, endangering lives and property. The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, stands ready to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“However, to avoid unnecessary confrontation and protect the democratic process, it is in the best interest of all stakeholders that the elections be postponed.

“Moreover, it is crucial to take into account the legal clarification provided by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice regarding the existing judicial rulings on Local Government administration in Osun State, particularly the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, 2025, which effectively nullified the Federal High Court’s earlier decision and reinforces the understanding that the elections, as currently planned, lack a solid legal foundation.”
