BREAKING: Why Tinubu must declare State of Emergency in Northwest state

A pro-democracy, United Democratic Coalition (UDC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, declare a State of Emergency in Zamfara State.

The group citing the security situation of the state said the breakdown of democratic order in Zamfara warrants the proclamation of a State of Emergency.

In as statement issued by the president of the coalition, Abdulrahman Danladi, UDC described the Northwest state as one under siege.

Danladi accused the present government of the state as lacking the capacity to protect the lives and property of residents of the state.

He stated that in Zamfara, armed groups freely operate by intimidate and attacking residents at random while those elected to protect them watch in silence.

He said, “What we are witnessing is not just lawlessness – it is executive tyranny. These lawmakers were elected by the people and have a duty to speak out. Instead of listening to them, the state assembly, clearly acting on orders, has shut them down.

“If Rivers with four lawmakers sparked talks of emergency rule, how is Zamfara with 10 suspended lawmakers and spiralling violence not a national concern?” Danladi queried.

Urging the president to met out the same standard he handed to Rivers in Zamfara State, Danladi said democracy has been murdered in the state.

“We are calling for a six-month state of emergency in Zamfara to allow security forces take control, restore peace, and return the state to constitutional order.”

“This is not the time for political correctness. It is the time for leadership. The people of Zamfara are under siege – both by bandits and by those who should be protecting them,” he said.
