Briggs did all to end ASUU strike on negotiation table — Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has expressed grief over the death of former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port-Harcourt, UNIPORT, Professor Nimi Briggs, 79, recalling his efforts at resolving the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, last year.

In a statement released yesterday by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Olajide Oshundun, Ngige recalled that Briggs, in addition to overseeing the activities of the Committee of Pro Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, did everything in his power as the Chairman of the Federal Ministry of Education on Renegotiation of Conditions of Service of University Workers to end the labor unrest in the university system. According to Vanguard.

As the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was on an eight-month strike, the Minister in particular “appreciated the dexterity with which Briggs played his role as a key point, seeking to encourage his colleagues to embrace discussion, but it bore no fruits.”
