The Super Eagles camp received encouraging news ahead of Sunday’s World Cup playoff against the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the Confederation of African Football confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is cleared to play.

The confirmation was shared through the team’s official X account on Saturday, putting to rest the anxiety that followed the midfielder’s yellow card during Nigeria’s 4-1 victory over Gabon.

“CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo,” the statement said.

“Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply.”

Ndidi, who was booked in the sixth minute of Thursday’s match, had picked up his second caution of the qualifiers, raising doubts about whether he would be available for the all-important fixture.

Meanwhile, Semi Ajayi is now set to return after serving his one-match suspension. The Hull City defender was absent for the win over Gabon, a game where Calvin Bassey worked alongside young Benjamin Fredrick in the heart of the defence.

Head coach Eric Chelle is weighing a slight adjustment to the back line. Fredrick could be shifted to right-back to replace Bright Osayi-Samuel, creating room for Ajayi to partner Bassey in central defence. His experience and calming presence are expected to be valuable against a physically aggressive DR Congo side.

Zaidu Sanusi is also likely to keep his place at left-back as the team looks to maintain stability in the defensive unit.
