Calgary Flames Finally Record Their First Shutout 65 Games Into the Season

The Calgary Flames have been struggling in the 2022-23 season, with underperformers in many areas, particularly goaltending.

Jacob Markstrom and Daniel Vladar have consistently been subpar, costing the team standing points in many one-goal games.

Markstrom previously achieved league-leading shutouts and the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy, but this year he has not managed any.

Vladar managed two shutouts in the previous season, but none so far this year.

Additionally, the Flames have allowed more goals than last year, with games involving two to five goals being more common.

However, in their 65th game of the season against the Minnesota Wild, a goaltending battle emerged between Markstrom and Filip Gustavsson.

The game remained scoreless after 60 minutes, with Markstrom making 39 saves compared to Gustavsson’s 23.

The Wild thought they had scored a goal with 1:40 left, but it was called back for being offside, and the game ended scoreless after the full 65 minutes.

Thus, in the most unconventional of ways, Markstrom and the Flames obtained their first shutout of 2022-23.
