China has issued a strong condemnation of the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing the incident as unacceptable and a serious breach of international norms.
A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the position known on Sunday while responding to questions on the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel in Tehran, which Iranian authorities say resulted in Khamenei’s death.
According to the spokesperson, the attack represents a grave violation of the sovereignty and national security of Iran and runs contrary to the principles governing international relations.
The official added that such actions undermine the objectives and core principles of the United Nations Charter and established global norms.
China, the spokesperson said, firmly opposes any actions that escalate tensions and destabilises the region.
Beijing called for an immediate cessation of military operations and urged all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
