Chukwueze Confident Super Eagles Eye 2026 World Cup Spot; Nwabali Undergoes Fitness Test
Samuel Chukwueze says the Super Eagles are keeping their eyes firmly on the goal as Nigeria pushes toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Naija News reports the Super Eagles swept past Gabon with a confident 4-1 win on Thursday night, securing their place in the final stage of the African qualifying playoffs.
The win has set up a decisive showdown with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday in Rabat. It is a fixture that the players already see as the real hurdle on their path to the global tournament.
“We are feeling good. We can celebrate a little bit because we have a game in a couple of days, the most important one is on Sunday. We have to focus on that,” Chukwueze told ESPN.
The match will be played at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm Nigerian time.
Amid the excitement, the team is watching the situation around goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who finished the Gabon game while nursing an injury picked up in the closing minutes.
During the game, Maduka Okoye had begun warming up, but Nwabali waved off the substitution and stayed between the posts until the final whistle.
He featured only in parts of Friday’s training session, while Okoye and Amas Obasogie completed their full goalkeeping drills. Head coach Eric Chelle is waiting for the medical team to deliver a complete report before deciding who starts against DR Congo.
