Cole Palmer misses open goal to let Tottenham off hook as Chelsea and FPL fans ask ‘how’

He has been Chelsea’s star man this season, but Cole Palmer proved he is human at the worst possible time with a surprising miss against Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea and Fantasy Premier League fans were left aghast by Cole Palmer’s miss against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues’ summer signing has been their best player this season, notching and assisting goals for fun. He was presented with a golden opportunity to give Mauricio Pochettino’s injury hit side the lead at Stamford Bridge.

The chance started when Mykhalo Mudryk fed Nicolas Jackson, who burst down the left hand side and struck a low effort of the underside of Guglielmo Viacario’s leg. As the ball bounced towards goal, Micky van der Venn got back to clear the ball of the line, but towards Palmer.

However, Palmer was flat-footed, and while the ball was leathered at his ankle, fans on social media were shocked to see his open goal effort cannon over the crossbar. One rival fan said: “Hope all dem Cole Palmer hype men just saw him miss a sitter. Waiting for their excuses.”

A second added: “Cole Palmer just missed an open goal from 4 yards out.. granted it came at him quick but for what everyone is saying about him being world class.”

A third added: “How does Cole Palmer as good as he is miss such a sitter.” A fourth even went as far to compare him to Nicholas Jackson, saying: “Cole Palmer. Wow! Even Jackson wouldn’t have missed an open goal from there.”

Palmer has enjoyed a magnificent debut season at Stamford Bridge. He has contributed 20 goals and nine assists in 29 Premier League appearances this season.

It’s a remarkable tally, considering many raised eyebrows greeted his £42.5million move from the Citizens. The Blues needed him to take responsibility even more than usual, as they came into Stamford Bridge with 14 senior players out injured.

Injuries have blighted the Blues’ campaign, but their list of absentees had never been bigger this season.
