Court Admits Final Results in LP, Obi’s Petition

In a significant development at the Presidential Election Petition Court, the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, presented the final results for all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. The document, known as Form EC8D(a), was tendered as evidence in their petition challenging the outcome of the February 25 elections.

The respondents, including INEC, Bola Tinubu, the vice-president, Kassim Shettima, and the APC, did not object to the presentation of the national results. However, objections were raised concerning the admissibility of form EC8Cs from 13 states, which will be addressed in the final written addresses. The court admitted the national document as evidence and marked it as an exhibit, with further hearings scheduled for Thursday, June 8, 2023.

Objection to PDP’s Subpoenaed Witness

In a separate petition challenging the presidential election outcome, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, called their first subpoenaed witness at the Presidential Election Petition Court. However, objections were raised by the respondents, including INEC, Tinubu, and the APC, regarding the testimony of the witness. The respondents requested time to study the witness statement and prepare for cross-examination.

The court proposed a 30-minute stand-down, but INEC’s counsel insisted on further time to review the witness’s status as an ad hoc staff of the Commission. Consequently, the court adjourned the trial until tomorrow, June 8, to allow the calling of the three subpoenaed witnesses. Earlier, the PDP and Atiku had presented their 11th witness, the PDP chairman from Anambra, Ndubuisi Nwobu, who testified about the disputed results at lower levels and the collation process. The hearing will continue on Thursday, June 8, 2023.
