Court Stops PDP National Convention, Party Convenes Emergency Meeting
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee (NWC) for a serious deliberation following Friday’s judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja halting its planned national convention billed for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Naija News recalls that Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, stopped the PDP from going ahead with its planned national convention scheduled for November 15-16.
The court ordered the PDP to put its plans for the convention on hold, citing a breach of rules.
Justice Omotosho directed the PDP to go back and put its house in order, and also to send the statutory 21-day notice before proceeding with the proposed convention.
The court order follows a suit initiated by three PDP members, Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary), alleging a breach of the party’s constitution in the convention’s preparation.
However, a member of the NWC, who spoke to PUNCH on condition of anonymity, said the meeting would hold on Saturday at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
The NWC member stated that the PDP leaders will review what transpired throughout the process and determine the next course of action.
The official said, “That’s the judgment. However, I know that the NWC has summoned an emergency meeting tomorrow. The leaders will review what transpired throughout the process and determine the next line of action.
“The party is set for a very serious deliberation, which will shape its next steps and provide members and Nigerians a clearer sense of direction in the coming days.”
Also commenting on the court judgement, the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, described the ruling as a setback for democracy, vowing that the party would appeal immediately.
He said, “This is not what we expected. We will appeal it. You cannot stop a whole political party from exercising its legal rights. This judgment today is a panacea to annihilating democracy in this country.”
