CSO asks EFCC, ICPC to investigate Akpabio’s tenure as An’Ibom governor

Network Against Corruption and Human Trafficking (NACAT) has lodged a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices And Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), urging them to investigate former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, for corruption allegations during his tenure as governor. The civil society organization has accused Akpabio of mismanaging funds and claims that the well-being of the people of Akwa Ibom was sacrificed for personal gain under his leadership.

These allegations come at a critical time, just days before the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, in which Akpabio is a prominent contender for the position of Senate President. The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) has endorsed Akpabio as their preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency. However, since leaving office as governor in 2015, he has been under investigation by the EFCC.

NACAT, led by its Executive Director of Investigation, Samson Tega, and Operational Manager, Stanley Ugabe, held a press briefing in Abuja to express their concerns about Akpabio’s suitability for the role of Senate President given the allegations against him.

In response to the petition, Chief Press Secretary to Akpabio, Jackson Udom, dismissed the development as a witch-hunt aimed at derailing the former governor’s Senate Presidency ambitions. Udom emphasized that investigation does not imply guilt and highlighted Akpabio’s record of service during his time as governor, stating that his achievements from 2007 to 2015 are still evident across the state.

However, Tega pointed out that the EFCC had previously invited Akpabio for questioning regarding allegations of misappropriation of state funds shortly after he left office. Tega stressed that the civil society organization is committed to combating corruption and ensuring that every penny of Akwa Ibom taxpayers is accounted for as investigations and prosecutions continue.

The petition from NACAT adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding Akpabio’s bid for the Senate Presidency. While his supporters argue that he is the ideal candidate to bring stability to the upcoming administration, his opponents are determined to prevent his rise to power. The outcome of the investigations by the EFCC and ICPC will play a crucial role in determining Akpabio’s political future and the perception of his legacy as a former governor. NACAT remains steadfast in its mission to hold public officials accountable and curb corruption in the interest of the people of Akwa Ibom.
