Datti Gives Two Reasons Why He Will Not Debate With Prof Wole Soyinka

Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has declined an offer to engage in a one-on-one debate with Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka. In a statement released by the chief spokesperson of the Obi-Datti campaign, Yunusa Tanko, Datti cited both cultural and political reasons for his decision.

From a cultural standpoint, Datti expressed discomfort with the idea of debating an esteemed figure like Prof Soyinka, who is 88 years old and a global icon. He argued that it would not be culturally appropriate to challenge and criticize the views of such a distinguished personality to his face, as it may be perceived as disrespectful.

Furthermore, Datti emphasized the political context of the situation. He pointed out that since Prof Soyinka is not an opposition candidate, there is no valid basis for a debate between them. However, Datti did express willingness to participate in a debate if Prof Soyinka can convince Datti’s preferred candidate to join the discussion.

This unexpected decision by Datti Baba Ahmed has sparked widespread debate and speculation among political analysts and commentators. Some have praised his cultural sensitivity and respect for Prof Soyinka’s stature, while others have criticized him for avoiding a potential opportunity to present his party’s policies and ideas in a public forum.
