Deadly Niger Attacks: 16 Vigilantes Killed, 42 Residents Kidnapped by Bandits

Bandits have launched deadly attacks on several communities in the Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing about 16 vigilante members and abducting 42 residents.

According to local sources, the attacks occurred between Sunday, 9 November, and Thursday, 13 November 2025, forcing many residents to flee to neighbouring communities for safety.

A source said the bandits first stormed Dutsen Magaji village on Sunday, abducting 22 residents.

“When they came on Sunday, the vigilantes pursued them and engaged them in a gun duel. In the process, three vigilantes were killed, and five people are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” the source explained.

He added that the attackers returned at dawn on Thursday, 13 November, invading Magama village during early morning prayers. The bandits reportedly surrounded the mosque while worshippers were praying and abducted more than 20 people.

According to him, some vigilantes attempted to confront the attackers, unaware that the bandits had set an ambush. The bandits opened fire, killing 13 vigilante members and injuring several others.

In a statement, the Press Secretary to the Chairman of Mashegu LGA, Isah Ibrahim Bokuta, confirmed the killings, describing the fallen vigilantes as heroes who sacrificed their lives to defend their communities.

Bokuta added that the local government appreciated their courage and selfless commitment to keeping the area safe.

When contacted, the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he would verify the incidents and revert.
