Eric Chelle Heads to Europe for Training, Stays on as Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is set to undertake further training with topEuropeanclubs while continuing to lead the Nigerian national team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick revealed that arrangements are being made for the Franco-Malian tactician to participate in internships at elite clubs to enhance his technical skills.

Speaking after Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025AfricaCup of Nations, Pinnick said he haddiscussedthe plan with FIFA technical head Arsene Wenger.

“As for the coach, I’ve spoken to him. I’ve also spoken to NFF. I spoke with Arsene, the head of FIFA technical, and I said, ‘No, listen. He’s exceptionally good, but even the best still go for further training,’” Pinnick said.

He added, “He can still do internships at some of these top clubs worldwide to gain additional technical knowledge. I’ve spoken with the NFF president and met with Arsene yesterday, and we are working towards that, so we are happy.”

NFF president Ibrahim Gusau also praised Chelle, highlighting the 48-year-old’s achievements since taking charge in January 2024.

“As the head of a hard-working technical crew, Mr Chelle has done exceedingly well within the one year he has been with us. He has shown enormous capacity, and we will continue to work with him,” Gusau said.

The endorsement comes amid growing support for Chelle, who has transformed the Super Eagles’ fortunes in just a year. Under his leadership, Nigeria has remained unbeaten in regulation time across 17 competitive matches, winning 11 and drawing six. At AFCON 2025, Chelle guided the team to their highest-ever tally of 14 goals in a single tournament, with the Eagles unbeaten in regulation time in all seven matches in Morocco.

“The journey to the next AFCON starts immediately in March. We don’t have the luxury todwellon past achievements. We must set to work immediately,” Gusau added.

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi alsobackedChelle, stressing the importance of stability.

“For continuity, I feel they should keep the coach because he is a wonderful manager. The only thing this team needs is continuity. We shouldn’t change things now because we didn’t make it to the final. We should remain focused as there are many competitions ahead,” Ndidi said.

Saturday’s victory over Egypt ensured Nigeria has now medaled in 17 of its 21 AFCON appearances. The only tournaments where the Eagles failed to reach the podium were in 1963, 1982, 2008, and 2021.
