Eric Chelle: “I Did Well” as DR Congo Eliminate Super Eagles from World Cup Qualifiers

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle insists he and his squad gave everything they had in Rabat as Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the World Cup were crushed by DR Congo in a dramatic play-off that ended in a penalty shootout.

Naija News reports that Eric Chelle and his boys lost 4-3 on penalties at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium on Sunday, bringing an emotional end to their push for a place at the 2026 tournament that will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Frank Onyeka lifted Nigerian fans early in the game with a sharp finish that put the Eagles in front. Their momentum did not last long. DR Congo found a reply before halftime through Meshak Elia, and the match turned tense from that point. Nigeria struggled to regain control, pushed through a cagey extra time, and fell short when the game was finally settled from the spot.

The defeat confirms Nigeria’s second straight absence from the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition. It is a setback that has already raised questions about the team’s direction, but Chelle refused to be pulled into debates about his own future.

“I think you have to ask the NFF and the commission,” he said when he was pressed on whether his job was under threat.

“I did well. We worked and I try to give my best. We gave our best; the players and the officials.”

Chelle took charge of the national team in January and oversaw the tail end of Nigeria’s qualifying campaign. His record in the series stood at four wins and two draws. Missing automatic qualification meant Nigeria had to take the longer route through the African play-offs, where they defeated Gabon 4-1 in extra time last Thursday before falling to DR Congo in the final hurdle.

Nigeria’s World Cup story has always been one of high expectations. Since their first appearance in 1994, they have reached six tournaments and advanced to the round of 16 on three occasions. But they have now failed to qualify for the 2006, 2022 and 2026 editions.

With the World Cup dream gone, the Super Eagles turn their focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament will take place in Morocco from December 21 to January 19, 2026. Nigeria finished as runners-up at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast and will attempt to chase a fourth continental title under Eric Chelle.
