Exclusive: SDP Faces Turmoil Over Contested NWC Appointments — What’s Really Happening?

A fresh leadership crisis has hit the Social Democratic Party (SDP) following conflicting claims over new appointments into the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
While the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, had earlier announced the appointment of Senator Ugochukwu Uba (Deputy National Chairman, South), Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar (Deputy National Chairman, North), and Mr. Hussaini Ado Bello (National Financial Secretary), the SDP’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, has dismissed the claims.
Speaking through the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Muhammad Biu, Gabam described the announcement as “false, unauthorised, and misleading,” adding that no constitutional meeting was convened to ratify such appointments.
“There was no resolution or official approval for the purported appointments. The alleged meeting of May 15 did not authorise any changes to the NWC,” Biu stated during a press briefing in Abuja.
He accused certain individuals of attempting to sow discord within the party ahead of the 2027 elections. “These are calculated attempts to weaken the only credible opposition party left standing,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the SDP Caucus in the House of Representatives, Hon. Jonathan Gazah, said the party would investigate the source of the press release and take disciplinary action.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy and inclusiveness, urging members to focus on grassroots mobilisation as preparations for 2027 intensify.
