Organized labor has opposed the Federal Government’s proposed privatization of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), citing fears that it will have a detrimental effect on the socioeconomic circumstances of Nigerians.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero, reportedly voiced serious reservations about the proposed privatization and its possible effects on the electricity industry to Vanguard. He underlined that key players in the power industry are afraid and uneasy about this action.
In the best interest of future generations, he urged all Nigerians to rally against this privatization, highlighting that it poses a significant threat to the state’s capacity to regulate, control, and ensure the safety of the nation’s grid system at all times.
Earlier reports indicated that the federal government was preparing to sell the TCN. This decision followed the impasse in negotiations between the Federal Government and the National Union of Electricity Employees, with the latter threatening to shut down the economy.
A confidential source informed reporters that discussions aimed at resolving ongoing disputes between the workers and the Federal Government had reached an impasse and were not achieving the desired outcomes.
