Garnacho at Fault as Chelsea Drop Points at Brentford

Chelsea were denied victory at the Gtech Stadium after Brentford’s Fabio Carvalho struck deep into stoppage time, cancelling out Moises Caicedo’s late goal in a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

The result means Enzo Maresca’s men have now recorded two wins and two draws from their opening four Premier League fixtures.

It was Alejandro Garnacho’s first game for Chelsea since his £40 million move from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old came off the bench in the second half and played a part in Caicedo’s strike, but his defensive lapse proved costly in the closing minutes.

Before arriving at Stamford Bridge, Garnacho had fallen out of favour under new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who banished him from the first-team squad.

Redknapp singles out Garnacho

Former Premier League midfielder Jamie Redknapp criticised the Argentine for failing to mark Carvalho during Brentford’s late equaliser.

“Garnacho has got to mark Carvalho. That is your job, it is as simple as that,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“Don’t lose him, you are now one of the defensive players in there. If he gets in behind you, it’s on you. The ball comes in and Garnacho is not concentrating, Carvalho gets the run and scores at the back post.”

Bright moments overshadowed by mistake

Despite the defensive error, Garnacho showed flashes of his attacking quality.

He injected pace into Chelsea’s play and was involved in the move that led to Caicedo’s 85th-minute goal.

Chelsea still searching for consistency

While Chelsea remain unbeaten, their inability to close out matches remains a concern.

Maresca’s side have dominated phases of games but continue to concede late goals.

The Blues next face Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the opening fixture of their Champions League campaign.
